Research-based learning with a focus on tourism students

freddyespinoza51

In a demonstration of academic commitment and dedication, the Tourism students from the Faculty of Hospitality Sciences at the University of Cuenca have developed an integrative project as part of their Applied Tourism Research course. This project focused on exploring the dynamics of heritage, leisure, and tourism in three emblematic sites of Cuenca’s Historic Center: Parque Calderón, San Sebastián, and El Vado.

The students employed a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques. They used participant observation and surveys to collect valuable data, which allowed them to gain a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the behaviors and perceptions of visitors and residents in these historic sites.

After collecting the data, the students applied advanced analyses using decision trees and multiple correspondences. These tools enabled them to deeply interpret the relationships and patterns found in the information. The analyses not only facilitated a clear understanding of the observed dynamics but also helped the students develop critical skills in data management and analysis.

The results of this research were highly satisfactory. The academic goals of the project were not only met, but the primary objective of teaching students to conduct rigorous and applied research was also achieved. This integrative project not only enriches the academic training of the students but also contributes to the knowledge and appreciation of heritage and tourism in Cuenca.

Initiatives like this highlight the importance of applied research in training tourism professionals, preparing students to face the challenges of the sector with analytical skills and a deep understanding of the social and cultural dynamics of their environment.

Congratulations to all the students for their hard work and dedication!
